How to prepare an avocado

It’s reeeal easy ✔️

First, cut all the way around the ripe avocado with a sharp knife, slicing down to the seedy centre.

You then twist and pull apart, which should leave the seed in one half of your avo.

Whack the knife on the seed to dig it in, and turn again to remove.

You can then scoop out your avocado with a spoon.

Enjoy your avocado, you’ve earned it 😉

A is for…

Known as the alligator pear, the avocado is one mean green superfood.

Fact bite –

The avocado is a large berry borne on Persea americana; the botanical name for the avocado tree. Their shape is similar to an egg, but can also be round. The skin is a lumpy dark green, which protects its fleshy light-green goodness, and it’s large, single seed.

The avocado is believed to have originated in central Mexico, with evidence of wild avocado consumption as far back as 10,000 BC. It has long been a staple of the Mexican diet since. It wasn’t until the mid 1900s that avocados started to become a common food source in Europe and the US.

There are 100s of varieties of avocado, but no more than 10 are grown commercially, with Hass being the most popular variety available. Mexico produces around half of the global avocado production, holy guacamole!

Health bite –

Avocado is often called a superfood, and with good reason – it contains a high nutritional value, and makes a versatile ingredient in culinary dishes. They have twice the potassium (important for muscular function) of a banana, and are chock-a-block with 19 other minerals and vitamins.

You get roughly 160 calories per 100g, the majority coming from healthy (monounsaturated) fat, which is anti-inflammatory.  Avocados can be used in salads, dips, desserts, or your baby’s food. They also make awesome beauty treatments – applying avocado to your hair or skin can leave them beaming with health.

An avocado is ready to eat when it has a little give to it when lightly squeezed. If it feels too squishy, it’s over-ripe.

  • The name avocado comes from the word āhuacatl – an Aztec word for testicle!
  • Avocados ripen once they’re picked off the tree.
  • You can buy avocado ice cream, two scoops please.
  • California is the American capital of the avocado.

Eat the right sugars

Feeling sleepy? Could be thems low sugar levels making you feel like a zombie princess, stumbling around in a haze of confusion.

Fruits contain small levels of Fructose – a natural sugar that gives us the right level of energy, so tuck in to a portion of them when you can.

Avoid the highly concentrated types of sugars that lead to deposition of fat, such as sugary sweets and fizzy drinks. Go easy on the fruit juices too! 

The golden apples of Greek mythology

A golden apple destined for ‘the most beautiful’ caused a war, while another three led to a marriage – yes indeedy this is food of the Greek Gods, people.

I’m not sure who this fellow could be that I’ve drawn, perhaps it’s Hercules during his 11th labour, relieved to have finally gotten hold of a golden apple from the garden of Hesperides, after a boatload of trouble leading to it.

The thunder bolt could be from Zeus getting aggy, since the apples came from his personal garden without permission, the cheek! ⚡ ⚡

A is for…

Ah, the apple. One of the most symbolic fruits in the world,  and first on our list.

 Fact bite –

 The apple is a fruit produced by Malus pumila, or the apple tree to you and me, and is usually round in shape, with a sweet taste. The apple originated from the wild forests of central Asia around 4000 years ago, but didn’t taste anything like the scrummy-tasting treat we know of today.

Today, apples are used for eating, in cooking, and in both non-alcoholic and alcoholic (hic!) cider production. There is over a staggering 7,000 varieties of apple are grown throughout the world, but Just 10 varieties make up around 70% of the global production.

There’s a good chance you’ll find them in your local shops and supermarkets, with varieties such as the popular Gala, Granny Smith, and Jazz apples appearing in the top 10. Popular varieties discovered and grown here in the UK are Cox’s, Russet and Bramleys. 

China is the leading producer of apples, growing around half the global production, with the US coming in a far-flung second at around 10% .

 Health bite –

 Other than being refreshing and flavoursome, apples are a good choice in a healthy diet. Apples are around 80% water, with around 10% being carbohydrate and around a 4% mix of vitamins and minerals.

They are also a good source of vitamin C, which helps heal the body, and potassium, which keeps your heart beating strong. An apple’s low calorie count and high fiber makes them great for staying fuller for longer, while keeping the weight off.

Apples also contain several antioxidants that help keep nasty illnesses and diseases at bay. Wash your apples before consuming!

 Did you know?

  • Apple seeds contain cyanide – a choice poison in the plot of murder mysteries! However, the amount in the seeds isn’t remotely close enough to do any serious damage. It’s still better to remove them, though.
  •  Throwing an apple to a women in ancient Greece was considered a marriage proposal. If she caught it, she accepted!
  •  It was believed that apples could bring everlasting youth in Celtic mythology, and golden apples bestowed immortality in Greek and Nordic mythology.
  •  Malusdomesticaphobia is the fear of apples.
